Cincinnati Reds sign right-handed reliever Trevor Kuncl

The Cincinnati Reds have signed right-handed reliever Trevor Kuncl to a minor league contract according to Driveline’s twitter account. He’s a St. Xavier High School graduate from Cincinnati and played collegiately at George Washington. During his first two seasons in college he was also a position player and saw time at catcher, first base, second base, third base, shortstop, and left field.

After his five years at George Washington where he posted a 4.35 ERA in 122.0 innings with 52 walks and 117 strikeouts he went undrafted. In both 2022 and 2023 he played for Lake Erie in the Frontier League and pitched in 76 games there before signing with the Texas Rangers in the spring of 2024. The Rangers released him at the end of spring training and he re-signed with Lake Erie before signing with Lancaster in the Atlantic League. Between his two stops in 2024 he posted a 2.31 ERA in 46.2 innings with 12 walks and 64 strikeouts.

The Mexican Winter League season begins tonight and Trevor Kuncl is expected to pitch for the Aguilas de Mexicali. When spring training begins in 2025, Trevor Kuncl will be 26-years-old, so time isn’t exactly on his side. What is on his side, though, is his stuff. His fastball works in the mid-90’s and can touch the upper 90’s. He also mixes in a cutter and a splitter.
