Spurs Included in Kevin Durant Rumors
The San Antonio Spurs are all-in on Victor Wembanyama, and adding an excellent supporting cast next to him remains the priority. Wembanyama is already one of–if not the–best defenders in the NBA, and has already exhibited terrifying two-way potential. The Spurs seem to have placed defense at the forefront of their development, but by adding an elite pure scorer next to Wembanyama, they could immediately elevate their play and enter contender status. Perhaps no one is a better offensive player than Kevin Durant, and he has already captured Wembanyama’s attention.
Adding the best pure scorer of all time to a roster with a player who has GOAT potential is a terrifying idea, even if Durant is 36 years old. Last season, he averaged 27.1 points and shot 41.3 from behind the arc, proving he is still an elite scorer. A recent trade proposal by The Wright Way Network would have the Spurs send Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson, and two first-round picks to the Phoenix Suns for Durant.
Durant went to college in Texas and might enjoy returning to the Lone Star State. The Spurs could trot out a starting lineup of Chris Paul, Stephon Castle, Jeremy Sochan, Durant, and Wembanyama, and immediately become one of the best two-way teams in the NBA. However, the Suns likely won’t be eager to part ways with their superstar and would want to see him play with Devin Booker and Bradley Beal for at least one more season, meaning this trade likely wouldn’t happen until the summer.
While a deal for Durant is unlikely, if the Spurs only part with two picks they would be able to quickly re-tool once he retires, keeping their championship aspirations with Wembanyama afloat. Losing Vassell would hurt, to be sure, but he is easily the best trade asset the Spurs have, although they seem content on building with him on the roster.
