Phillies Projected To Bolster Bullpen With Two Elite Pitchers In Free Agency

The Philadelphia Phillies looked incredible for 162-plus games in 2024, but when the lights were the brightest, Rob Thomson’s team came up short of the ultimate prize. Now that free agency is here, the Phillies have the chance to pursue upgrades at a few positions, namely in the outfield and on the mound. There’s growing speculation that the Phillies are the favorites to land Chicago White Sox stars Luis Robert Jr. and/or Garrett Crochet in a trade this winter.

If Philadelphia can add one or both of those White Sox stars, its free agency could be solely focused on bolstering the bullpen, which is exactly what Bleacher Report’s Tim Kelly predicts the Phillies to do. Kelly predicts Philadelphia will re-sign right-handed pitcher Jeff Hoffman while also signing right-handed pitcher Blake Treinen away from the Los Angeles Dodgers. Hoffman, 31, is predicted to sign a three-year, $39 million deal. The veteran righty left a bad taste in Philadelphia’s mouth after his monumental collapse in the 2024 postseason. But before that, Hoffman tossed 118 2/3 innings with a 2.28 ERA across two years with Philadelphia. He’s earned his way to being re-signed despite the postseason collapse.

Treinen, 36, is predicted to sign a one-year, $10 million deal with the Phillies. Treinen is coming off a spectacular year where he posted a 1.93 ERA across 46 2/3 regular season innings with the Dodgers. Treinen was then elevated to the team’s closer for the postseason where he helped lead them to a World Series. It won’t be easy to pull Treinen from the Dodgers, but if the Phillies can do it, it would be a huge move for them. Well, if the Phillies can’t beat the Dodgers, why not start stealing their players?
