Leeds United defender remains unavailable for visit of Luton Town
Leeds United will be without their defender as they prepare to welcome Luton Town to Elland Road. They head into their upcoming clash on the back of their dramatic 4-3 away win at Swansea City last time out.
Schmidt, 24, was snapped up by the Whites on a four-year deal this past summer running until June 2028. He left FC St. Gallen to move over to England and he has since had to bide his time for game time in West Yorkshire.
In this latest update regarding his availability, LeedsLive report he won’t be able to play against the Hatters. Daniel Farke remains without midfield pair Ethan Ampadu and llia Gruev, with Joe Rothwell and Ao Tanaka slotting in for the pair in the middle of the park over recent weeks.
Leeds United selection update
Schmidt is a useful player for Leeds United to have in their squad as he is versatile and can play in a few different positions.
He also has time on his side and is a player who will develop down the line. He featured in their last game before the international break against QPR but didn’t play against Swansea City.
The former Switzerland youth international is having to be patient as he looks to get into the starting XI.
Schmidt has made Farke’s squad on 10 occasions and has managed to get on the pitch four times.
He hadn’t played for five matches before his appearance against QPR but looked bright against the Hoops and shored things up.
Prior to his switch to the Whites, he played 105 games for St. Gallen and scored seven goals for the Swiss Super League club.
Schmidt rose up through the academy at Lausanne-Sport and was a regular for them at various different youth levels before breaking into their first-team.
What now?
Leeds United won’t want to rush the player back in and will wait for the right opportunity.
Junior Firpo and Sam Byram are other players in his position.
The Whites will need to assess Schmidt over the coming days and see how he is ahead of their away trip to Blackburn Rovers this weekend.
In the meantime, Farke’s men will be looking to keep their momentum going against Luton Town as they look to rise back to the summit.
