On Wednesday morning, the Chicago Triubune’s Dan Wiederer Tweeted that he wouldn’t be surprised if the Chicago Bears showed interest in veteran tight end Durham Smythe, who was released by the Miami Dolphins on February 14.

Then, on Wednesday evening, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler followed up with a report saying that the Bears, indeed, were targeting Smythe. Since he was released, he’s able to sign with a team at any time.

Smythe (6’6”, 246) would be a backup Y and provide special team experience. He has 132 receptions in his career.

The 29-year-old Smythe was originally a fourth-round pick of the Dolphins in 2018 out of Notre Dame, and he has appeared in 112 games with 74 starts. Last season, his cap hit was $3.3 million, and he was set to make a little over $4 million in 2025, but by releasing him the ‘Fins saved $2.2 million.
