Former Blue Jays radio voice Ben Wagner joins Baltimore Orioles broadcast team
Former Blue Jays radio play-by-play announcer Ben Wagner is joining an American Division rival’s broadcast team for the 2024 season: the Baltimore Orioles.
In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Wagner said, “I am THRILLED to join the Orioles broadcast team. Let’s go O’s!”
Wagner was the voice of Blue Jays radio broadcasts for the last six seasons, after which Sportsnet decided not to renew his contract in November — a move criticized by many fans on social media.
“Thank you, Ben, for sharing your voice and expertise with listeners across Canada. We wish you the very best,” Sportsnet said in a statement at the time.
Wagner had been calling Blue Jays games since 2018 after he replaced longtime broadcaster Jerry Howarth. Before that, he was the voice of the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons for 11 years.
Earlier this month, Sportsnet announced that Ben Shulman — son of Blue Jays TV announcer Dan Shulman — will be the new full-time, radio play-by-play broadcaster for the Blue Jays, replacing Wagner.
The Blue Jays start spring training in Dunedin on Saturday against the Philadelphia Phillies. Opening day is March 28 in Tampa Bay against the Rays.
