Ex-Red Sox Fan-Favorite Utility Man Almost Signed With Yankees In Free Agency

It sounds like New York almost landed the former Red Sox utility man

One former member of the Boston Red Sox almost signed with the New York Yankees.

Former Red Sox fan-favorite Enrique Hernández was looking for his next opportunity and recently found it as he re-signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Hernández joined the Red Sox ahead of the 2021 campaign and remained with the club until being traded to the Dodgers ahead of the 2023 Major League Baseball Trade Deadline.

The veteran utility man joined Foul Territory to discuss free agency and stated that if he hadn’t signed with the Dodgers, the other club that was in the running to land him was the Yankees.

“Coming off back-to-back down years and having half of the league’s owners being bankrupt wasn’t ideal,” Hernández said. “There was no communication, then a little communication, then dead silence, then a little communication, then dead silence, and really things didn’t start picking up until the last three weeks or so.

“At the end, the (Detroit Tigers) were very interested. The (Los Angeles Angels) were there but never really made an offer. The (San Francisco Giants) were kind of in there but they were waiting until the end to make an offer and didn’t end up making an offer…At the end, it came down to the Dodgers or Yankees, big market only. I choose the Dodgers because they have a lot of left-handed hitters.”

Hernández is a 10-year veteran and has seen time all over the diamond. He grew into a fan favorite in Boston and it certainly would’ve been interesting if he ended up with the club’s biggest rival.
