REPORT – Dallas Cowboys Could Make Veteran Wide Receiver Available Before 2024 NFL Draft

Dallas Cowboys, Michael Gallup

The Dallas Cowboys hold the 24th overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft, and after a stellar 12-5 season (that ended in disaster), they can go any which way regarding the use of their high-end asset. However, despite being linked to offensive linemen and linebackers, the NFC East squad could burn the pick on a wide receiver if one of the tier-one talents slides down the board. The idea of pairing superstar wideout CeeDee Lamb with an elite-level talent is attractive, especially if the Cowboys ditch one of their own before the draft. Per uSTADIUM on Twitter (also known as X), Dallas could make receiver Michael Gallup available in trade talks as early as this weekend.

Dallas Cowboys WR Michael Gallup: Could be on the Move

The Cowboys could make a move before the draft, moving on from wideout Michael Gallup, according to uSTADIUM. Gallup, a third-round pick in the 2018 NFL draft, shined during his first three seasons with the club, accumulating 58 receptions for 908 yards and five scores per 17 games. However, injuries set Gallup back in 2021, with the Colorado State product registering only 445 receiving yards in nine games. Despite the departure of star receiver Amari Cooper the following season, teammate Noah Brown finished second among the wideouts regarding receiving yards. Gallup again lost work this season, finishing fourth in receiving yards behind Lamb, tight end Jake Ferguson, and veteran Brandin Cooks.

Gallup signed a five-year, $62.5 million extension in 2022. The 27-year-old has a cap hit of $13.9 million for the 2024 season, the same as his dead cap. However, his dead cap value goes to $8.7 million in 2025 and $4.3 million in 2025. If Gallup plays out the rest of his contract, he will become an unrestricted free agent in 2027.

Dallas Cowboys: Could Go Wide Receiver Early in Draft

Dallas could select a wide receiver earlier in the 2024 NFL draft if they move on from Michael Gallup. Sans Gallup, the Cowboys would have Brandin Cooks, CeeDee Lamb, Jalen Tolbert, and KaVontae Turpin among their top wide receivers. Lamb, a one-time All-Pro, will remain the top option, but the 30-year-old Cooks enters the final year of his contract, while Tolbert and Turpin have little NFL production.

In a draft flush with receiver talent, the Cowboys could still burn the 24th overall pick on an offensive lineman like most mocks predict while taking a wideout with a later selection. Speedster Xavier Worthy, Georgia’s Ladd McConkey, and Florida State’s Keon Coleman could be available for Dallas with the 58th or 87th overall picks.
