The Green Bay Packers Could Add Huge Piece To Defense

The Green Bay Packers have made numerous changes on the defensive side of the ball.  That includes bringing in almost a whole new coaching staff on that side of the ball, signing star Safety Xavier McKinney, and moving on from multiple players in De’Vondre Campbell, Darnell Savage, and Jonathan Owens.

The Packers are far from done adjusting their defense this off-season.  They will undoubtedly add to the defense through the draft. Likely with some premium picks, however, they still very well could address the defense through free agency.

The Green Bay Packers have been uncharacteristically active in free agency, but the team could still take another swing on a veteran in Stephon Gilmore, the 33-year-old cornerback.

Cem Yolbulan with Dairyland Express gave out a few free agent options who are still available that would make sense for the Packers. All of the players mentioned were coincidentally Super Bowl champions, including offensive tackle Donovan Smith and running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire.

The most notable free agent that Yolbulan mentioned was Gilmore, stating how a short-term deal could be beneficial for both parties.

“A one-year veteran signing would do wonders for this team on the opposite side of Alexander,” Yolbulan wrote. “And Stephon Gilmore might be the best option available right now.”

The Packers Nearly Traded For Stephon Gilmore

Gilmore may seem like a surprising free agent target for some Packers fans, but it wasn’t that long ago that general manager Brian Gutekunst tried to take a swing on the 2019 Defensive Player of the Year.

After rumors of him being released by the New England Patriots in 2021, Gilmore expressed that he wanted to play for the Packers. Unfortunately, due to salary cap constraints, the Packers were unable to get a deal done, resulting in the Carolina Panthers trading a sixth-round pick for the star cornerback.

The Packers Would Benefit Greatly From Adding A Cornerback Opposite Of Jaire Alexander

A dynamic defensive tandem of Jaire Alexander and one of the more sought-after cornerbacks in 2024 free agency would make the Packers’ secondary more formidable.

Cornerbacks will be an integral part of Jeff Hafley’s new defensive scheme in Green Bay.

It is very likely that the Packers aren’t done adding to their secondary.  Acquiring another Safety along with a cornerback opposite Jaire Alexander seems very likely.  Would Gilmore be the type of veteran this secondary could lean on for one or two years?
