Pittsburgh Steelers Land NFC No. 1 WR In Trade Proposal
The Pittsburgh Steelers have a significant void to fill at wide receiver.
The team traded Dionte Johnson to the Carolina Panthers and with Russell Wilson now locked in as the team’s starting QB for 2024, it will be critical to surround him with as many weapons as possible to set the offense up for success.
While the Steelers have signed Van Jefferson and added Quez Watkins since trading away Johnson, those two wideouts combined for only 351 receiving yards during 2023
The 49ers star set career-highs of 1,342 receiving yards and 17.9 yards per reception in 2023. He also had 75 catches and 7 touchdowns.
Acquiring Aiyuk, though, wouldn’t just be costly from a draft capital perspective. Spotrac projected Aiyuk to be worth about $96.1 million on a 4-year contract. Such a deal would give the 26-year-old receiver an average annual salary north of $24 million
There have also been rumblings about Pittsburgh acquiring Broncos WR Courtland Sutton, but as of now, a trade doesn’t seem likely.
Pittsburgh Steelers Land New York Giants WR Darius Slayton In Trade Proposal
Steelers Now’s Nick Farabaugh suggested a new potential trade target for Pittsburgh — New York Giants wideout Darius Slayton.
“This could be an under-the-radar strong move for the Steelers if they were willing to cough up some draft capital,” Farabaugh wrote. “Slayton is still on an affordable deal, and a new contract will not break the bank.
“Theoretically, the team will want to pay George Pickens after this season, and Slayton’s contract does not prevent them from doing that, even in the event of a new deal.”
Although Slayton hasn’t dominated as the Giant’s No. 1 WR, he’s posted decent numbers. He’s eclipsed the 700-yard mark in four of his five seasons and has recorded 19 touchdowns.
Slayton will be up for a new contract after the season but it will be an affordable one that won’t break the bank for Pittsburgh.
Why The Pittsburgh Steelers Could Target Darius Slayton
The Steelers are in desperate need of help at the wide receiver position and it wouldn’t be a surprise if they added one through free agency and also acquired a potential starting wideout in the draft.
The void left by Dionte Johnson must be filled if Pittsburgh is going to have offensive success with Wilson under center.
Without Johnson, the Pittsburgh Steelers have only one receiver on its current roster that had more than 209 receiving yards last season.
Slayton would be an instant upgrade for the Steelers offense so this trade makes sense.
