Which unrestricted free agents are Red Wings likely to re-sign?
DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings’ six pending unrestricted free agents all had an impact on the team to various degrees.
Some won’t return, which is always the case, due to cap space, the need to replace them with younger players or their own desire for a better deal and opportunity elsewhere.
“I expressed interest in all our (UFAs) that I have interest in bringing you guys back,” general manager Steve Yzerman said. “It’s a bit of a puzzle. We have some (restricted) free agents we have to sign (notably Moritz Seider and Lucas Raymond) and some of them are going to have a significant impact on our salary cap regardless of whether we go short or long term.
“I have an interest in bringing guys back, all of those players, to a certain level. Take into consideration who’s coming up (from Grand Rapids). Get a rough idea sooner or later of how much money we’re going to have because we’re getting close to the cap. I got to really start to think about the cap now. So, some decisions might simply be based on our cap situation.”
Chances of return: Good.
Chances of return: Unlikely.

Daniel Sprong: He provided offense (18 goals, 43 points) from the fourth line, in limited ice time (12 minutes per game), which isn’t easy. Checking is not his strong suit and it’s why he was a healthy scratch in six games down the stretch. The Red Wings will probably want a defensive-minded forward to fill his spot and he’ll surely look for a better opportunity elsewhere.
Chances of return: Highly unlikely.
