Yankees drop pitcher after loss to A’s, add new reliever
NEW YORK — The first locker on the left next in the Yankees clubhouse was used this week by pitcher Cody Morris, who was called up on April 19 after starting the season in Triple-A.
Morris was in a good mood before a game this week talking soccer with a reporter. His favorite Premier League team is Manchester United. He said he wished that he’d traveled to the UK to see an United match at Old Trafford before becoming a father.
“It would be hard now,” he said.
Morris will have to wait awhile longer to debut in pinstripes. After being in the Yankees’ bullpen for seven games and not being used in any of them, the right-hander was farmed out after the Yankees’ 3-1 loss to the Athletics on Thursday night.
The Yankees dropped Morris to free up a roster spot for reliever Michael Tonkin, who was claimed off waivers from the Mets earlier Thursday.
Tonkin, 34 was activated on Friday and be in the Yankees’ bullpen for their series opener in Milwaukee.
This will be the third club this season for the righty, who began the season with the Mets and was traded to the Twins for cash on April 9 before returning to the Mets on April 17 on a waiver claim.
