The New York Yankees are hoping to add some star power to the starting rotation shortly.

New York is one of the favorites to land Orix Buffaloes star Yoshinobu Yamamoto, but that doesn’t mean it will land him. Yamamoto’s market is extremely robust and there will be a massive auction for his services. New York has the money to land him, but it’s unclear what will happen.

If the Yankees miss out on Yamamoto, another hurler who could make sense is Texas Rangers lefty Jordan Montgomery. He has been mentioned as a fit for the Yankees on multiple occasions this offseason, but a move may be unlikely, according to The Athletic’s Jim Bowden.

“Montgomery is a perfect match for teams such as the Yankees and (St. Louis Cardinals), but he’s already pitched for both and because they traded him isn’t inclined to return,” Bowden said. “He seemed so at home with the (Texas Rangers) — paying for manager Bruce Bochy, working with pitching coach Mike Maddux, and being able to learn from future Hall of Fame hurlers like Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer — that it appears Texas would be his first choice.”

Montgomery was selected by the Yankees in the fourth round of the 2014 Major League Baseball June Amateur Draft. The big lefty eventually debuted with New York in 2017 and spent the first five-plus seasons of his career in town before being traded to the St. Louis Cardinals in 2022.

The 30-year-old is expected to land a massive deal this offseason as well, but it sounds like the Yankees may not be an option.
