North Melbourne defender ruled out of Suns match, pair in the mix for returns

“He’s not far away but we want fit players.”

North Melbourne have confirmed defender Zac Fisher will miss Saturday’s clash with North Melbourne after hurting his foot in Round 16.

Fisher was subbed out of last week’s loss to the Western Bulldogs after sustaining the injury, with the club giving the ex-Carlton forward a chance to prove his fitness at training this week.

The half-back was given until Thursday’s session to get the green light, but won’t be risked despite coming close to full health.

“He won’t play. He came out of the game halfway through the third last week and was hobbling around,” coach Alastair Clarkson confirmed.

“He’s not far away but we want fit players. A big part of his game is his run and kicking. We’re better off getting him right.”

Fisher’s absence will open the door for teenager Colby McKercher to return from his own foot injury, with the Pick 2 selection having not played at AFL level since Round 9.

McKercher has spent the past two matches in the VFL and enjoyed a strong afternoon last weekend against Footscray, booting two goals from 26 disposals.

Defender Griffin Logue could also be considered for a comeback after a lengthy spell in rehabilitation after suffering an ACL rupture last year.

Logue returned through the VFL over the past fortnight and is a chance to slot into a backline role under Clarkson to tackle the Suns’ tall forwards.

“Colby and Griff have had really good weeks at reserves level and got some good match fitness. Colby’s had foot problems before, so we just wanted to make sure we eased him back into full match play,” Clarkson added.

“They’ll both come into calculations.

“Griff was obviously a part of our plans and has missed 12 months, but Kallan Dawson and Charlie Comben have come on, and Aidan Corr has played some good footy.

“We feel we’re not as poorly positioned in that space as we might have been.”

North Melbourne will confirm their squad for Round 17 at 6:20pm (AEST) on Thursday evening.
