The Texas Longhorns Are Deserving of a Place in the College Football Playoff
The Texas Longhorns won the Big 12 Championship 49-21 over the Oklahoma State Cowboys, and they deserve a spot in the College Football Playoff.
ARLINGTON, Texas – There are only four teams in college football that are better than the Texas Longhorns.
The Longhorns are not only a certified College Football Playoff contender after their 49-21 thrashing of the Oklahoma State Cowboys at AT&T Stadium in the Big 12 Championship, but they also deserve a spot in the playoff.
Oregon is out of the picture after losing to Washington on Friday night, and conventional wisdom holds that the Horns still need the Florida State Seminoles to lose to Louisville in the ACC Championship game on Saturday night.
Even if the Seminoles win against the Cardinals, Texas has done more than enough to earn a spot in the top four.
This season, the Longhorns have four wins over ranked opponents, including possibly the best win of any team in the country after marching into Tuscaloosa and defeating Alabama by double digits.
They won their last two games by a combined score of 106-28, and they have the nation’s 14th-ranked strength of schedule.
Meanwhile, the Seminoles have defeated two ranked opponents, only one of which is currently ranked in the CFP Top 25 Rankings, while Texas has three ranked opponents.
And, while it is not the Seminoles’ fault, their best player, quarterback Jordan Travis, is out for the rest of the season due to an unfortunate injury.
Yes, Florida State is spotless, and Texas has a loss on its record. But it took a miraculous final drive by Oklahoma’s No. 12 ranked team to make that happen.
Will this be a popular viewpoint? Probably not outside of the state of Texas.
But, based on their performance over the last two weeks and their unbeatable resume, the Longhorns more than deserve a spot in the CFP.
Because there are only four better college football teams than the Texas Longhorns.
