MLB Rumors: Free agent pitcher Jordan Montgomery is someone the Texas Rangers have had clear interest in bringing back, and with the Winter Meetings underway, Jon Heyman of the New York Post says that the Rangers are seen as the favorites to land Montgomery “for now.”

That “for now” is potentially doing a lot of work, and is a bit worrisome for those of us who would like to see the Rangers bring Montgomery back. Montgomery has seen his stock rise since coming to the Rangers in a deadline deal, with two strong months followed by a quality playoff run. Last month, Heyman’s projections put Montgomery at around $80-120 million as a free agent, while our poll projections showed a range of $105 to $140 million.

Montgomery missed time due to Tommy John surgery several years ago, but otherwise has been a solid, reliable starting pitcher. Given the injury issues with several of the current Rangers starters, having someone like Montgomery, who you feel good about being able to make 30 starts a year, would provide a needed level of security.
