Baltimore Orioles Could Land Ace Later in Offseason

White Sox GM on Dylan Cease trade rumors

More links between the Baltimore Orioles and them trading for an ace this offseason continues to be put out there, but the timeline could come later.

It’s hard not to become impatient when a team who is expected to be active in the offseason doesn’t do much, while others are signing players left and right.

That’s the situation with the Baltimore Orioles, who were rumored to become spenders in free agency and active in the trade markets, but have continued on with their patented patience.

However, there’s also a difference between being dormant and waiting for the right opportunities to strike a deal.

MLB insider Ken Rosenthal says that could happen for the Orioles later in the offseason as the Chicago White Sox might hold onto their ace Dylan Cease until the pitching market settles a bit.

“The White Sox are talking to clubs about Cease, but still seem inclined to wait until after Yoshinobu [Yamamoto] and company sign, believing the urgency of teams that strike out on those pitchers will only increase,” he reports in a piece for The Athletic.

Cease has been seen as an obvious choice for Baltimore to pursue. He would immediately become their best pitcher and ace of the rotation after finishing as AL Cy Young runner-up in 2022.

The right-hander also fits the club control aspect that Mike Elias and his front office like as well.

“Cease, who is under club control for two more seasons, remains an obvious target for the Reds and Orioles, who are not involved with the top free agents,” Rosenthal writes.

So far, it’s been the Cincinnati Reds who have been the aggressive team this offseason after missing out on the playoffs last year.

The Orioles, who made the postseason but were eliminated in embarrassing fashion, have been the team content with what they currently have.

Maybe Cease’s availability is what gets Baltimore to finally make a major move that was long rumored heading into Winter.
