Former Orioles’ Farmhand Catcher Signed By Red Sox

The Baltimore Orioles have seen their division rival Boston Red Sox sign their former catcher to a deal this offseason.

With the Baltimore Orioles continuing to navigate their offseason, they made a promising signing to add depth to their catching unit.

Small moves that could turn into impact types of decisions is something that Mike Elias has done throughout his tenure with the organization.

The Orioles’ division rival, Boston Red Sox, took a page out of his book when signing one of their former farmhands to a contract this offseason.

“Mark Kolozsvary has signed a minor league deal with the Boston Red Sox, per source. Deal comes with a spring training invite. Kolozsvary played in the big leagues with the Reds in 2022 and in AAA with the Orioles and Twins in 2023,” reports ESPN insider Kiley McDaniel.

It’s been an interesting offseason for the Red Sox.

After finishing last in the AL East for two seasons in a row, it was expected they might be aggressive in free agency to reload their roster.

That has not happened so far and their high-profile move was actually trading one of their stars, Alex Verdugo, to their archrival New York Yankees.

For Baltimore, Mark Kolozsvary was claimed off waivers by the team back in 2022 and he spent a short time with the organization. He was sent to Double-A to start 2023, before earning a promotion to Triple-A where he struggled mightily at the plate. He had a slash line of .162/.250/.265 with two home runs and seven RBI in 20 games.

His lone Major League appearance for the Orioles came in June 2023 when called-up to replace Ryan Mountcastle on the roster. Kolozsvary was a defensive substitute in the game, never appearing at the plate, and was designated for assignment the next day.

He last played for the Minnesota Twins’ organization before hitting free agency and being signed by Boston.
