Former Baltimore Orioles Pitcher Signed by Houston Astros
The Houston Astros signed former Baltimore Orioles reliever Tayler Scott to a minor-league deal, per per the MLB transaction tracker.
Scott was most recently with the Oakland Athletics.
Scott, a native of South Africa, was a reliever for the Orioles in his first Major League season in 2019. He began the year with the Seattle Mariners and joined the Orioles after they claimed him off waivers.
With Baltimore, he pitched in eight games and did not figure in a decision. He had an 18.69 ERA as he struck out seven and walked five in 8.2 innings.
The Orioles sent Scott back and forth between the Orioles and Triple-A Norfolk before he became a free agent.
He was out of Major League Baseball for three seasons and returned in 2022 when he was called up by the San Diego Padres. There, he went 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA in eight games with the Padres. They eventually designated him for assignment and he eventually ended up in Philadelphia’s organization for the final month of the 2022 season.
Last season he pitched in 18 games and threw a career-high 17.2 innings for thre teams — the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Boston Red Sox and the Athletics. He gave up 12 runs, struck out 17 and walked 10.
He ended up in Oakland after Boston designated him for assignment on July 16.
For his career, Scott is 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA in 39 games in the Majors.
The Astros may be hoping to get the pitcher that Scott showed himself to be in Triple-A in 2023. There he had a 1.64 ERA in 38.1 innings and struck out nearly 30 percent of the hitters he faced.
