Could the Red Sox actually trade one of their stars to the Dodgers?

The Boston Red Sox need to add more pitching this offseason but instead may end up trading one of their best pitchers soon.

Although Boston has plenty of money to spend, it currently is projected to have the third-highest lowest payroll in the American League East. Plus, the Red Sox are rumored to be looking to cut salary rather than add.

One player who has been mentioned in trade talks recently because of this is closer Kenley Jansen. He signed with Boston last offseason in free agency and is in line to make $16 million in 2024.

His high salary and the fact that Boston could fill the closer role with someone like Chris Martin or Tanner Houck have made Jansen expendable despite an impressive season.

One team that has been mentioned as a possible trade partner is the Los Angeles Dodgers, according to the New York Post’s Jon Heyman.

“Kenley Jansen, mentioned in the same report, is indeed available and wouldn’t look bad back in a Dodgers uniform,” Heyman said. “Evan Phillips is outstanding, but extra help wouldn’t hurt baseball’s superteam.”

This isn’t the first time Los Angeles has been floated as a possible trade partner. It isn’t hard to see why. Jansen is one of the best closers in Major League Baseball history and spent the first 12 seasons of his career with the Dodgers.

Los Angeles clearly is going all in on the 2024 campaign, why not make a major splash and bring back a familiar face?
