Should Rams Pursue Colts Free Agent Corner to Bolster Secondary?
One of the areas where the Los Angeles Rams struggled this past year was in pass defense, where they ranked No. 25 in the NFL, giving up 255.0 yards per game. So, with that in mind, should the team consider signing a free agent or two to bolster their secondary? Brad Spielberger of PFF ranked the best free agents this upcoming offseason available at each position, and for cornerbacks, one of the more intriguing players for the Rams is Indianapolis Colts veteran Kenny Moore II.
“Moore pushed for an early re-up on the four-year extension he signed in 2019, but his efforts were to no avail as the Colts worked to overhaul the roster and get younger in the secondary, in particular,” Spielberger writes. “Fortunately for Moore, he earned a career-high 79.3 coverage grade along with a 71.5 run-defense grade — his sixth straight season going above 65.0. Moore became just the 28th player in NFL history to record two pick-sixes in the same game with his outstanding Week 9 performance and can now look to capitalize on a strong season.”
The Rams’ defense was in the bottom half of the league this past season in passing yards allowed, both per game and overall. If the Rams were to sign a veteran like Moore, those numbers could feasibly go down. Related: Rams to Hire Former Chargers Interim Head Coach Moore finished this season with 93 total tackles, which is a solid number for a corner, also taking into consideration that he is only 5-9. Whether the Rams sign a free agent like Moore or go out and trade for a veteran as they have in the past, the secondary is one of the things that needs to be addressed if the team wants to contend next season.
