Phillies Floated As Top Landing Spot For Polarizing Ex-Red Sox Hurler

Could Philadelphia land the polarizing former Red Sox hurler?

What a difference a year makes.

Former Boston Red Sox hurler Ryan Brasier is a free agent and seemingly has a robust market. Last offseason he still was with Boston and some thought the club would let him go.

Brasier remained with Boston through the start of the season and made 20 appearances with the club and logged a 7.29 ERA before being designated for assignment and eventually released.

The veteran hurler signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers and completely turned things around. Brasier shined with Los Angeles and had a minuscule 0.70 ERA in 39 appearances with an eye-popping 38-to-10 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

While with the Dodgers, Brasier switched up his pitch mix and shined. He now is a free agent and is looking for his next opportunity. He joined the Dodgers on a minor league during the season and now likely will land a big league deal and will have multiple choices.

It seemed like he could be on his way out of the big leagues, but now it wouldn’t be surprising to see him get a multi-year deal in free agency.

It’s unclear where he will land, but one team that has been floated as an option is the Philadelphia Phillies by Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter.

“Brasier enjoyed a career renaissance with the Los Angeles Dodgers last season after he was released by the Boston Red Sox in May, posting a 0.70 ERA and 0.72 WHIP in 39 appearances,” Reuter said. “He is one of the few relievers still available who is a safe bet to land a big league contract. Predicted Landing Spot: Philadelphia Phillies.”

Reuter attempted to predict the landing spots of the top remaining free agents and had Brasier at No. 15 on his list and linked him to the Phillies.

While this doesn’t necessarily mean a deal is on the way with Philadelphia, a move could make sense.
