Phillies Targeting Four-Time All-Star

Red Sox Notebook: Kenley Jansen is right on time

There are some minor tweaks the Philadelphia Phillies are looking to make before the upcoming season begins. More depth in their pitching unit to prepare for the long year ahead and solid, contributing bench pieces are on the wish list. Of course, they continue to be a team connected with some of the best free agents remaining, but getting those players signed will all come down to price. The Phillies might also be looking to upgrade their team in another way.

According to Jon Morosi, they are interested in trading for Kenley Jansen who is coming off an All-Star season with the Boston Red Sox. “I would also mention one more team that’s been somewhat quiet this offseason, the Phillies … the Red Sox want either pitching back, or the potential to reinvest some money in other pitching,” he said during an appearance on MLB Network. Philadelphia would bring in a reliever who is still competing at a high level. At age 35, Jansen appeared in 51 games and recorded 29 saves with a 3.63 ERA. His career number is 2.52 with an ERA+ of 157.

The Phillies wouldn’t getting the Los Angeles Dodgers version of the closer, but he still would be a major addition to the backend of their bullpen which struggled in the NLCS. It seems unlikely the Red Sox would move someone who’s coming off an All-Star season for something as little as cash considerations. But, it’s also unlikely they will get back a substantial pitching option for a player who’s 36 years old. The best scenario for Philadelphia is they’re able to get Jansen without having to give up any of their prospects or potential contributors. The righty will get paid $16 million in 2024, so this would be a commitment from ownership for one season of work.

Whether something gets done will be seen, but Jansen is available to be acquired and the Phillies could have interest.
