Vincent Kompany using iconic Man City moment to inspire Burnley relegation fight

Burnley boss Vincent Kompany is refusing to give up on Premier League survival and is using Sergio Aguero’s famous title-winning goal in 2012 as inspiration

Burnley boss Vincent Kompany is drawing inspiration from a famous Premier League moment as he gears up his team, currently threatened with relegation, for their match against Arsenal on Saturday.

Kompany’s team are seven points away from safety, having only managed to secure 13 points out of a possible 72 so far this season. They’re up against a formidable opponent in title contenders Arsenal, who have been on a winning streak with four victories in a row, netting 16 goals along the way.

Despite the odds being stacked against his team, the Belgian cites the unforgettable moment in 2012 when Sergio Aguero scored a last-minute goal for Manchester City against QPR, turning the game around and clinching the title. This, he says, is proof that anything can happen.

He said: “If you read the numbers, it’s not great but I experienced a moment in my life where we had to score two goals in three minutes to win the title. What are the statistics and odds of that?

“What are the odds of a young kid from Brussels with a diverse background making it into the biggest league in the world and the trophies he won, so what are the odds of that?

“So the consistent message is ‘belief’. One thing you are guaranteed is if you give up, you get nothing.”

Burnley have struggled to secure points against top six teams this season, and the upcoming match with Arsenal at Turf Moor is even more challenging given Burnley’s poor home record.

However, Kompany is not overlooking this match in favour of upcoming games against Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, West Ham and Brentford.

“We focus on every game,” he stated. “We have been too close in those big games to think that we can’t do something or can’t create a moment for us.

“We can’t wait for momentum. The key thing is to build momentum throughout and you can’t wait for it to happen, you have to go out and get it.

“There is no magic recipe to approach this game. They have incredible players in every position that can make a difference and we have a team that at all times is a difficult team to play against and those are our strengths and what we need to make use of.”
