4 perfect Callum O’Hare replacements Coventry City must consider if he leaves in the summer
With Callum O’Hare’s contract running out in the summer, Coventry City must find a replacement for their star midfielder.
Callum O’Hare could be on his way out of Coventry City this summer so manager Mark Robins may need to find a replacement for his star midfielder.
The Englishman has shone in the Sky Blues midfield this season – returning from a long-term injury to contribute six goals and two assists in just 18 league matches, form which has been central to the ascent up the Championship table into the top six.
However, with his contract up at the end of the season, he is currently on course to leave the club in the summer. While the Sky Blues have offered him a new deal, the Englishman has yet to sign it and could move elsewhere – particularly if Coventry do not win promotion this year.
O’Hare is a huge part of the Sky Blues’ play-off push, and losing him this summer would be a dent to their hopes of battling for Premier League promotion next term and beyond.
Filling the void will be hugely important and with that in mind, we look at FOUR replacements that the Midlands club should look at if O’Hare leaves the club in the summer.
1Jack Rudoni
Huddersfield Town’s Jack Rudoni could be targeted as a replacement for O’Hare if he leaves the club in the summer.
The midfielder has been a key player for the Terriers for the past two seasons since joining from AFC Wimbledon in 2022. He has played regular first team football since he was 19 years old, playing 39 times for the Dons in the 2020/21 campaign.
Despite being 22 years old, he already has nearly 200 games under his belt. Over the years, he has developed to add creativity and goals to his game, scoring 12 times and assisting 5 goals in his last season at Wimbledon.
With 6 goals and 7 assists since joining Huddersfield, Rudoni is still acclimatising to the Championship but those numbers have been for one of the worst teams in the division. With a move to a club higher in the table like Coventry, he would have more opportunity to shine and could be a great replacement for O’Hare.
2Ilias Chair
Despite QPR’s poor performances this season, Ilias Chair has stood out as the player to watch at Loftus Road.
While the R’s turned down a multi-million-pound deal for the midfielder this month, they may be more inclined to negotiate a deal in the summer, when their future is more clear.
If QPR are relegated, then the club will be able to command a lesser fee for the player, giving Coventry the chance to swoop in for a cut-price deal.
However, even if he manages to keep QPR up, Coventry could splash out on the 26-year-old Moroccan in the summer as an O’Hare replacement. He is out of contract in 2025, so his club will have little leverage in negotiations, which could help the Sky Blues get a good deal for the player.
Chair is in the top 25% of players for expected assists while he completes more accurate long balls per game than 95% of the division.
Replacing O’Hare’s output in the final third will be vital – 25 goals and 27 assists since the start of 2020/21 show that the R’s talisman could do that.
3Davis Keillor-Dunn
An option from the lower leagues that Coventry could focus on in the summer is Mansfield Town’s Davis Keillor-Dunn.
The 26-year-old Englishman has been one of the star players in League Two this season, scoring 16 goals and assisting five times in the league, helping his club into second place in the table.
The biggest gamble for the Sky Blues would be Keillor-Dunn’s lack of experience in the Championship, although they may have to look at cheaper, lower-league players if O’Hare leaves without earning them a transfer fee.
However, Coventry will have to fight off some other EFL clubs for his signature, as several have been linked with a move for the midfielder in recent times.
4Zian Flemming
Millwall’s attacking midfielder Zian Flemming could be a potential replacement for O’Hare in the summer
The Dutch midfielder has already proven himself in the Championship and is a similar age to the Coventry star. He has contributed 21 goals and seven assists since he arrived at the start of last season and could help fill the gap being left by O’Hare in the summer.
By joining a higher performing side like Coventry, Flemming would have more chance to flex his creative muscles and could perform on a higher level than he has at Millwall so far.
The biggest issue with this transfer would be the fee, given that Flemming signed a long-term contract with Millwall in the summer of 2022. Coventry may have to overspend to bring him to the club, although that is likely regardless of who they target to replace O’Hare.
