It sounds like New York’s biggest rival could sign a former Yankees stud

One former member of the New York Yankees could end up with the club’s biggest rival.

There still are some intriguing players out there in free agency and one former member of the Yankees is one of the best. Former Yankees hurler Jordan Montgomery has gotten a lot of attention this offseason after shining with the St. Louis Cardinals and Texas Rangers in 2023.

New York traded Montgomery to St. Louis in 2022 and he has thrived since. He impressed with St. Louis but was even better with Texas and helped lead them to the World Series.

Now he is looking for his next home and reportedly has met with the Boston Red Sox about a possible signing, according to ESPN’s Buster Olney.

“The Red Sox had a Zoom meeting with Jordan Montgomery recently,” Olney said. “He’d represent an upgrade for their (2024 rotation), and if signed to a long-term deal, could be part of the staff rotation. They certainly have the payroll flexibility to make it happen.”

Montgomery has been linked to a handful of clubs but the Red Sox have been one of the most prominent options. The big lefty also has been mentioned as a possible reunion candidate for New York, but that seems unlikely at this point.

The 31-year-old likely won’t land as large of a contract as he once hoped for, but likely will sign soon. Boston significantly needs to improve its starting rotation and it sounds like it could end up being an option for Montgomery.
