Report: Senior Spurs star is ‘excited’ to sign a new contract with the club

Heung-min Son

Tottenham Hotspur are ready to step up contract talks with Heung-min Son, and it is thought keeping the captain at the club beyond 2025 is now a top priority for Spurs, with the player himself believed to be ‘excited’ to get the deal done.

Son has now been with Spurs for nine years, and is one of the longest-serving members of the Lilywhites squad.

The decision was made to appoint the South Korean as the club captain last summer upon Ange Postecoglou’s arrival.

That has proven to be a brilliant choice, with Son stepping up to be the leader Spurs needed during this year of great transition. The 31-year-old has also provided plenty of attacking returns, too, with 13 goals and six assists this year (Transfermarkt).

Despite the clear intention to build a young and exciting squad under Postecoglou, Son is considered a key part of the project in North London. However, his current deal expires next year.

Discussions on a new contract have been ongoing all season, but it is thought Spurs are now ready to expedite that process and get Son locked in for the long term.

New Tottenham contract is coming for Son

That’s according to sources at HITC, who claim Spurs want to “progress discussions” and have made the new contract a “key target” for the summer.

The “blossoming relationship” between Son and Postecoglou is crucial to this, and the forward is thought to be “loving life” at the club right now and is very keen to “extend his stay”.

The fact Son is “excited” to commit his future to Spurs should make this a straightforward negotiation.

Spurs Web Opinion

I cannot imagine Sonny ever leaving Spurs now. I wouldn’t be surprised if he signs a four-year deal and commits the rest of his playing days to the club. He loves the club so much, and everyone connected with the club loves him too, and he won’t get that kind of connection anywhere else.
