Firm £20m Hull City stance must hold as Spurs and Ajax circle: View
Hull City will need to stand firm amid interest from Tottenham Hotspur and Ajax if they want to receive the ideal fee for Jaden Philogene.
Hull City are having an impressive season in the Championship and a big part of that is down to the performances of star winger Jaden Philogene.
The summer signing has been one of the best players in the league during his maiden campaign with the Tigers, scoring eight and assisting six times already at the MKM Stadium.
His goals have helped propel Hull into a fight for the play-off places, with Liam Rosenior and his side looking to improve on last season’s 15th-place finish.
With interest coming from across Europe, the Tigers will have to hold firm if they want to get the best price possible for their most valuable asset.
Ajax are linked with a move for Philogene
Dutch club Ajax have been linked with a summer move for Philogene, clearly impressed by the Hull forward’s performances in the Championship this season.
Tom Collomosse on X reported that the Amsterdam outfit were keeping tabs on the winger, with a view to a potential move.
Ajax are struggling in the Eredivisie so far this season, and currently sit fifth in the league after a very disappointing campaign so far. They have scored just 53 times, far below the top-scoring sides in the division, and look to be monitoring Philogene with a view to adding more firepower to their squad in the summer.
They join Tottenham Hotspur, who have also been linked with a move for the winger. Boss Ange Postecoglu is reportedly interested in signing the winger, and could make a move in the summer for the Championship star.
Hull should hold out for £20 million fee
Due to the current interest in Philogene, Hull should hold out for at least £20 million.
The Englishman has been incredibly important for the Tigers so far in this campaign, having a hand in 33% of all goals they have scored in the division. He has impressed both with his goals and in creating chances, being at the top 30% of non-penalty goals, shots, and assists, all per 90 minutes, out of all the wingers in the league this season.
Jaden Philogene stats – per Fbref.com | Per 90 | Percentile Ranking (vs. wingers) |
---|---|---|
Non-penalty goals | 0.30 | 77 |
Non-penalty expected goals (npxG) | 0.24 | 72 |
Shots | 3.86 | 99 |
Assists | 0.23 | 71 |
Expected assisted goals (xAG) | 0.18 | 51 |
npxG + xAG | 0.42 | 63 |
Shot-creating actions | 4.23 | 67 |
Beyond the stats, though, the eye-test tells us what an exciting prospect Philogene is and that he has the traits needed to cut it in a top division.
Aston Villa are reported to have a buyback clause for the player, who left the club last year on a £5 million deal. If Hull win promotion to the Premier League, they can sign the winger for £15 million.
That is below the fees we’re coming to expect for a top Championship player, with Jack Clarke being rumoured to leave Sunderland in a £20 million move in the summer.
However, there is always the risk that they do win promotion via the play-offs, in which case it is unlikely they receive more than £15 million for the player due to the clause.
With 3 years still left of the 22-year-old’s contract, the club will not in any hurry to sell him if they don’t receive any substantial offers. An increase in performance in the next few years could even increase his price, so the Tigers will be happy to wait until a £20 million fee – or more – can be raised for Philogene in the future.
The player himself claims he does not want to leave the club and wants to take them up to the Premier League, so they have no current worries about him forcing a move away.
