Ex-Red Sox Superstar Reportedly Discussing Contract With Marlins

Miami reportedly is showing interest in the former Red Sox superstar

One former member of the Boston Red Sox somehow still is available in free agency.

Opening Day quickly is approaching and yet six-time All-Star J.D. Martinez still is looking for his next opportunity despite a strong 2023 season. Martinez joined the Los Angeles Dodgers in free agency last offseason and smashed 33 home runs and drove in 103 runs.

He has been linked to a handful of teams but hasn’t found his next opportunity yet. It sounds like a deal could come soon, though. Martinez reportedly is in discussions with the Miami Marlins about a possible deal, according to SportsGrid’s Craig Mish.

“Free Agent J.D. Martinez and the Marlins have had recent discussions,” Mish said. “Miami seems to prefer the rotating DH combo of Josh Bell & Jake Burger thus not a fit, at least for now. Martinez is seeking a (two-year) deal per source.”

Martinez has been one of the best designated hitters in baseball in recent years and certainly will be able to help out whichever club he lands with. He spent five seasons with Boston before joining the Dodgers and was a star.

In five seasons in Boston, Martinez was named an All-Star four times. The only season Martinez wasn’t named an All-Star was the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign when there wasn’t an All-Star Game.

Miami surprised some people and won 84 games last season and earned a National League Wild Card spot. Landing someone like Martinez could go a long way to taking another step forward in 2024.
