Raptors will give RJ Barrett ‘as much time as is needed’ following death of younger brother
‘They’re going to get any kind of support that we can offer’
The entire Toronto Raptors organization is mourning the death of RJ Barrett’s younger brother and will give the team’s leading scorer all the time he needs to cope with the tragedy.
Raptors head coach Darko Rajakovic began his pre-game session with the media ahead of Friday’s home game against the Orlando Magic by saying: “That sad news shook up all of us. We are all here for RJ: teammates, coaches, whole organization and Canada Basketball, as well.”
The coach said there is no timetable for Barrett’s return to action.
“He’s going to take as much time as is needed to process this hard time for him and for his family. We’re in touch with RJ and his family and our thoughts and prayers are with them. We’re hoping that they can feel our support and love.”
Rajakovic said the tragedy has understandably impacted the entire organization.
“It’s been a really tough time. Guys, they saw when RJ was leaving Denver that morning (following a great performance by Barrett against the defending NBA champions). I had to explain, with the permission of family, what was going on. Some of the guys, they had a little bit of knowledge about what’s going on with his health, the majority of the guys,” Rajakovic said.
“Everybody wanted to keep that private. It’s not easy. Everybody’s dealing with that different way, but it’s everybody’s affected. Players and coaches, all of us are in touch with RJ and his family, and they know we are here for them. And they know how much we love them. They’re going to get any kind of support that we can offer.”
