Red Sox make 2 roster moves, option versatile right-handed hitter to WooSox

FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Red Sox made two roster moves Thursday. They optioned infielder/outfielder Romy Gonzalez and infielder David Hamilton to Triple-A Worcester.

The 27-year-old Gonzalez had a shot to make the Opening Day roster because he’s a versatile right-handed hitter and Boston is left-handed hitter heavy, especially in the outfield. But Gonzalez will start the season in Triple A with an opportunity to help out the big league club at some point during the regular season. MassLive’s latest projection that ran earlier Thursday had Gonzalez and Hamilton beginning the season at Worcester.

Boston claimed Gonzalez off waivers from the White Sox on Jan. 31. He played in 86 major league games for the White Sox from 2021-23, posting a .222/.239/.361/.600 line.

The 26-year-old Hamilton appeared in 15 games for Boston last year, going 4-for-33 (.121 batting average) with two doubles.

The major league spring training roster is down to 40 players. Opening Day is next Thursday in Seattle.

More roster decisions are coming soon. Three veterans in camp — first baseman C.J. Cron, catcher Roberto Pérez and lefty reliever Joely Rodríguez — will all have the ability to opt out of their contracts Friday by 2 p.m. if not guaranteed spots on the Opening Day roster.
