Unanticipated: Sunderland adds the Premier League boss to their summer manager roster
Sunderland add Championship boss to their manager shortlist ahead of the summer
It kickstarted the search for another new, permanent manager, with the next boss set to be the fifth of Kyril Louis-Dreyfus‘ ownership; Lee Johnson, Alex Neil, Tony Mowbray, and Beale.
As things stand, the Black Cats sit in 12th place of the Championship and could do with ending their seven-game winless run to ease fears of a potential relegation scrap with eight games to go.
But off the pitch, the thoughts of Louis-Dreyfus and Kristjaan Speakman may be heavily on who their next manager will be.
What managers have Sunderland been linked with so far
The first and most inevitable name linked with Sunderland is Reims boss Will Still.
He was linked with the job after Sunderland sacked Mowbray last year but remains in France, where he continues to impress.
Other names linked include Polish coach Marek Papszun, as well as former Swansea City and Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper.
The Sunderland hierarchy have also been urged to consider axed Sheffield United boss Paul Heckingbottom.
Sunderland interested in Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl
An emerging report from iNews has shared an insight into Sunderland’s manager hunt.
Their report says that Still remains a person of interest, along with an unnamed Belgian coach who the club have been making checks on ahead of the summer.
And a new name in the frame is Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl.
The former Southampton, Bayern Munich, and Germany no.2 took charge of the Owls in October last year and has since earned plaudits for his expressive style of play.
Rohl is the Football League’s youngest manager at 34 years old.
Danny Rohl could be the perfect fit for Sunderland
Sunderland clearly want a younger manager to reflect their playing squad, and hopefully compliment it too.
A younger coach might be better able to relate with the young players and Rohl is exactly that.
But with Sheffield Wednesday he’s also shown his adaptability.
His playing squad there is very average, yet in 30 games he’s taken 12 wins with a Sheffield Wednesday side who were winless before he took charge this season.
Wednesday are now just a point from safety and they’ve made their resurgence by playing some very daring and exciting football.
Sheffield Wednesday all of a sudden are a very potent attacking team, but they’re also proving to be solid at the back.
Barring a 6-0 defeat vs Ipswich Town last time out, the Owls had kept four clean sheets in seven games prior to that.
And what might make Rohl more preferable than someone like Still is that he’s now got Championship experience; albeit not a lot, but Rohl knows the rigors and demands of the second tier.
The German could be a dark horse in the running for the Sunderland manager job.
