Cleveland Browns discuss trade rumors surrounding recent first-round selection
Like all other teams, Cleveland Browns general manager Andrew Berry is busy preparing for the 2024 NFL Draft that kicks off April 25. But that doesn’t mean Berry isn’t still seeking out other opportunities to improve the Browns’ roster, whether it’s in NFL free agency or via trade.
Boasting a talented roster on both sides of the ball, the Browns have several players other teams would love to add to their core. Yet, the Browns are in the business of competing for a chance to return to the playoffs; they’re not ready to start selling off some of their talent.
Still, that hasn’t prevented other teams from contacting Cleveland about some of the players on their roster, including the 26th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Greg Newsome II.
While there have been several trade rumors surrounding Newsome, the Browns don’t seem to be interested in parting with the 23-year-old.
While Newsome has started 39 of the 41 games he’s appeared in since joining Cleveland three seasons ago, he hasn’t lived up to his draft status. Yet, Newsome is still a serviceable player who, as Berry said, plays a big role in Cleveland’s defense led by Jim Schwartz.
Newsome is entering the final year of his rookie contract with the Browns, but the team can exercise their fifth-year option, which would keep him around in 2025 at a rate of $13.3 million.
