Flyers Sign Esteemed NCAA Prospect to AHL Tryout
The Philadelphia Flyers are continuing to stock their cupboard full of high-upside talent.
This time, their latest addition comes by way of an AHL tryout with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.
NCAA free agent Matt Miller, formerly of the University of Nebraska-Omaha, has joined the Flyers organization on a professional tryout, per the AHL transactions page.
Miller, 24, spent four seasons with Nebraska-Omaha, scoring 38 goals, 33 assists, and 71 points in 127 NCAA games. Miller’s production in the NCAA was almost identical to his production in the USHL, where he scored 33 goals, 37 assists, and 70 points in 180 games.
Granted, scoring isn’t really Miller’s thing, but he offers some size at the right wing position. The burly Leo, Indiana native checks in at 6-foot-3, 201 pounds, so he won’t be a pushover along the walls.
Perhaps the Flyers see some untapped potential in Miller, as the 24-year-old scored an NCAA career-low seven goals last season. Miller, however, scored at least 10 goals in each of the two seasons before this past one.
Perhaps most notably, at least from a Flyers perspective, is that the Flyers brought him aboard on a tryout. This is important because the club currently sits at 49 contracts signed in the organization out of a maximum of 50.
If Miller would have signed an entry-level contract with the Flyers, it would have closed the doors on any further business being done this season.
For example, University of Minnesota graduate Bryce Brodzinski has played all five years of his NCAA eligibility, so if he is to sign his entry-level contract with the Flyers before the summer, they’ll need that last contract slot to pull it off.
Miller’s signing was registered by the AHL on Tuesday, so we’ll keep our eyes peeled for his Phantoms debut and monitor his progress from there.
