Here’s what Jets GM Joe Douglas says about possibly trading up to Round 2

The Jets are slated to pick just once on Friday night, but will general manager Joe Douglas try to change that?

They traded back one spot to No. 11 in the first round on Thursday before boosting their offensive line with Penn State tackle Olu Fashanu. With that deal, Douglas added draft capital in Round 4 and 5 (picks 129 and 157 from Minnesota), which the Jets could try to parlay into another trade later this weekend.

“Having that extra ammo is great,” Douglas said on Thursday when asked about possibly trading up into the second round. “It’s gives us a lot more flexibility. So we’ll huddle up tomorrow, see how the rest of the round goes, and we’ll put our board together again tomorrow night.

The Jets don’t currently hold a pick in Round 2 because of last offseason’s trade for quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The next time they’ll be on the clock is for the No. 72 overall pick in Round 3.

“I’m sure there’s going to be about five or six different scenarios that we’ll run through in terms of moving up, moving back, saying put,” Douglas said. “So having these extra picks certainly has given us the flexibility to do a lot of different things.”

Even with their new picks that came courtesy of the Vikings, the Jets don’t have the kind of ammunition that would allow them to trade up into the second round this year. Douglas would almost certainly need to employ a 2025 pick if he wants to pull that off.

Recent history proves that second-round trades bring good things for the Jets. In 2022, they traded up with the Giants to jump from the No. 38 pick to No. 36 and select running back Breece Hall.

In 2023, the Jets traded their fourth-round pick (112) to the New England Patriots for a later fourth-round pick (No. 120 overall) and a sixth-round pick (No, 184 overall).
