NFL insider issues ‘clarification’ over Travis Kelce signing new Kansas City Chiefs deal
The Kansas City Chiefs stole the headlines once again yesterday as they agreed on a new deal to make Travis Kelce the highest-paid tight end of all time.
Kansas City is maintaining its dynasty’s crucial pieces and paying them accordingly.
Before the NFL Draft, key figureheads Andy Reid, Brett Veach and Mark Donovan were all rewarded new deals.
Head coach Andy Reid was rewarded with an extension which will run through to 2029.
Moreover, per The Athletic, Big Red is set to earn $18 million per year which has been justified with three Super Bowl wins in five years.
Andy Reid and Travis Kelce confirm they will not be retiring
There was talk about the Chiefs head coach retiring in the 2023 offseason but he confirmed this would not be the case.
Now, Reid will not be leaving Kansas City anytime soon and is on the hunt for a three-peat plus more.
Kelce has been underpaid for a while and has been the greatest tight end of this generation.
Furthermore, he has pioneered the position and somehow managed to exceed the talent of Chiefs legend Tony Gonzalez.
However, there was confusion around the new deal that Kelce had signed with the Chiefs.
Kelce reported to have a further two-year extension through to 2027
Initially, Tom Pelissero explained the deal would be a two-year extension which would run through to 2027.
A deal which would see the tight end remain in Missouri for a further two years beyond the expiration of his current contract.
Therefore, the nine-time Pro Bowler would have four more years on the roster and be active until 38.
But, Pelissero admitted soon after he had made a crucial mistake.
He wrote: “Clarification on Travis Kelce’s contract: It’s a new two-year, $34.25 million deal, replacing the two years and $30.25M he had left on his old deal. So he’s under contract through 2025, not 2027. Apologies for the miscommunication.”
Kelce is set to become the highest-paid tight end on his current deal
Kelce was receiving no two-year extension but a wage increase.
He was set to make $30.25 million in the remaining years but will now become the highest-paid tight end at $34.25 million.
There are no four more years of Kelce but just the same contract length on an increased wage.
