Oklahoma WR Gavin Freeman to enter transfer portal
Freeman became the fourth scholarship player for the Sooners to enter the portal in the post-spring window.
A fan favorite will be finishing his career somewhere else.
Oklahoma third-year wide receiver Gavin Freeman announced late Tuesday night on social media that he would be entering the transfer portal with two years of eligibility remaining.
“I will be entering the transfer portal with 2 years of eligibility remaining,” Freeman wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter). “I wanna thank the University of Oklahoma and the fans for all the support and love.”
Freeman quickly became a fan favorite after coming to the Sooners as a preferred walk-on from nearby Heritage Hall High School in Oklahoma City ahead of the 2022 season. In his first career game, Freeman took an end-around handoff in for a long touchdown in the season opener against UTEP.
The in-state product then had a memorable moment in the following year’s opener, as well. Against Arkansas State, Freeman returned a punt back for a touchdown in what would go on to be a 73-0 beat down delivered by Oklahoma to begin the second year under head coach Brent Venables.
Last season, Freeman pulled in 19 total receptions for 95 yards and a touchdown. He also ran the ball five times for 20 yards. For the majority of spring camp, Freeman was out due to an undisclosed injury.
With the wide receiver position among the deepest on the team, it’s not overly difficult to see the rationale for the former walk-on and now scholarship wideout. Freeman will now find a spot to finish his career out elsewhere where he will likely have a much better chance of seeing regular snaps and targets.
Oklahoma, meanwhile, now clears out another scholarship spot at a position of surplus that can be applied at a position of need. With OU already having a loaded collection of wideouts including Jalil Farooq, Deion Burks, Nic Anderson, Jayden Gibson, Andrel Anthony and Brenen Thompson, among numerous others, this is a room that can certainly handle losing a player.
Freeman becomes just the fourth scholarship player to leave Oklahoma by way of the transfer portal in the post-spring window. He joins linebacker Shane Whitter, defensive back/linebacker Justin Harrington and cornerback Jasiah Wagoner.
On the other end, the Sooners have since added two new players in the transfer portal in this window in SMU offensive lineman Branson Hickman and Louisville defensive tackle Jermayne Lole.
The NBA regular season is over and the play-in tournament set to tip Tuesday night. That means we can take a collective look back at the draft class of 2022 and how they fared in their rookie seasons. Yet, we’re not just rating the top rookies. We’re tracing their trajectories — including what they were ranked out of high school and where they were ultimately drafted.
The process not only provides a broader understanding of how these players have developed, but it also gives some clues as to what characteristics or qualities can best translate to the highest levels of the game.
