NBA Trade Idea Sends Blazers’ Jerami Grant to Raptors
The Portland Trail Blazers could be busy on the trade market this summer.
The Portland Trail Blazers have some retooling to do within their team, and it could involve parting ways with some of their bigger contracts.
Bleacher Report’s Andy Bailey drew up a trade scenario that would send Jerami Grant to the Toronto Raptors for Bruce Brown, a 2028 first-round pick swap and a 2027 second-round pick.Grant’s contract is onerous (it runs through 2027-28, when he has a $36.4 million player option), but he’s averaged 20.7 points and shot 40.2 percent from deep over his two seasons in Portland.
For Portland, this is almost entirely about getting out from under the Grant contract that was signed prior to last summer’s Damian Lillard trade. This deal does that while also slightly improving the team’s draft prospects and giving it another veteran in Brown who it could flip before February.
The longer the Blazers hold on to Grant’s contract and the older he gets, the harder it may be for Portland to trade him. While the Blazers value what he brings to the table as a teammate and veteran, he may be holding the team back from moving forward with his massive contract.
Grant has four years left on his deal, so there’s hope that Portland can get more for him than just an expiring contract, a pick swap and an additional second-round pick. However, his value isn’t very high given the length of his deal.
This is why the Blazers likely won’t trade Grant and either hope his value improves or wait it out until the cons outweigh the pros in keeping him.
