Spurs, Blazers Could Make Sense as Trade Partners

Keldon Johnson’s return gives San Antonio Spurs much-needed moxie

The San Antonio Spurs and Portland Trail Blazers could benefit from one another this offseason.

The Portland Trail Blazers need to find a way to clear some space in the backcourt, and the San Antonio Spurs could value from a veteran point guard.

That’s why Bleacher Report’s Andy Bailey suggests a potential swap between the two teams that would send Malcolm Brogdon to the Spurs and Keldon Johnson to the Blazers.

The San Antonio Spurs are one of the teams that might be interested in Brogdon, who’d make life a little easier for rising star Victor Wembanyama.

If the Blazers could get a young, bully wing like Keldon Johnson, as well as maybe a draft asset or two, they’d have to think about making a deal.

In Brogdon’s first season with the Blazers, he averaged 15.7 points per game while serving as a mentor for No. 3 overall pick Scoot Henderson. Now that Henderson will enter his second season, Brogdon’s presence won’t be needed as much. And as an expiring contract, the Blazers would be smart to get some value for him.

The Spurs have Johnson coming off the bench, which is a smaller role than what he is used to. Johnson’s move to the bench saw a decrease in production from 22 to 15.7 points per game this past season.

While Johnson wouldn’t be guaranteed to start for the Blazers, he could bounce back after his down year and prove to be a key glue guy for Portland. He’s signed on for at least three more seasons, so he would provide more value than Brogdon’s expiring deal.
