Spurs Are Reportedly Open To Trading Key Veteran
The 2023-24 season was a dismal one for the San Antonio Spurs, but they have plenty of hope for the future thanks to rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama.
Now they have the task of starting to build a team around him that they hope will someday win at least one NBA championship.
The Spurs don’t plan to take their time — they’re reportedly looking to trade both of their first-round draft picks in order to land a star guard, and per Brett Siegel, they’re also open to dangling Keldon Johnson as trade bait.
Johnson, a 6-foot-5 forward, was one of San Antonio’s few other productive players this season, and he averaged 15.7 points a game.
He was a first-round draft pick in 2019, and at age 24, he could be a building block for some other team for years to come.
There have been plenty of rumors that the Spurs have been interested in trading for the Atlanta Hawks’ Trae Young, a three-time All-Star guard, this summer.
However, more recently there has been at least one report that they have little interest in acquiring him.
Wembanyama lived up to the immense hype surrounding him this season by putting up 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and a league-high 3.6 blocked shots per game, and he’s barely scratching the surface of what’s possible for him.
Many still feel he will be arguably the best player in the world within three to five years, especially if the Spurs get him a legitimate facilitating point guard who is also a scoring threat.
