Rangers add Garabito, DFA Anderson

After improbable road to MLB debut, RHP Gerson Garabito helps Rangers snap losing streak

The Rangers add Gerson Garabito to make today’s start

The Texas Rangers have purchased the contract of pitcher Gerson Garabito, who is today’s starter, the team announced today. To make room for Garabito on the active and 40 man roster, the Rangers have designated pitcher Shaun Anderson for assignment.

Garabito is a 28 year old who the Rangers would have been very familiar with in the late 2010s, as he spent 2013-19 with the Rangers’ stadium-mates in Surprise, the Kansas City Royals. After a middling season in 2021 with the San Francisco Giants AA and AAA teams, he was not in affiliated ball until he was signed by the Rangers this year. He has put up a 2.05 ERA in 30 innings over seven appearances between Frisco and Round Rock this year.

Garabito will be making his major league debut today, and I expect he will not be long for the active roster, given that Nathan Eovaldi and Jon Gray should be returning shortly. He can be optioned when the Rangers are ready to send him down, since they wouldn’t need to open up a 40 man roster spot right away.

As for Anderson, he was a guy who was at Round Rock as depth for exactly this reason — he could be summoned to provide innings in the major league bullpen if needed, and then designated for assignment and waived when they don’t need him on the active roster.
