Tottenham could sign Ivan Toney in ‘surprise’ £40m deal – sources
Tottenham could sign Brentford star Ivan Toney for a “surprise” fee of just £40million this summer, sources have told Football Insider.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed Brentford are reluctantly ready to allow the England international to move on once the transfer window reopens next month.
Reports previously suggested the Bees were looking for a fee in the region of £100million to let Toney leave the club in the January window.
O’Rourke revealed the fee is now significantly less and £40million could be enough to prize the forward away from west London ahead of his contract expiring in June 2025.
Signing a new striker is believed to be one of Ange Postecoglou’s priorities heading into the summer after Football Insider revealed earlier this month Spurs will consider offers to sell Richarlison.
Ivan Toney could join Tottenham in cut-price deal
Toney has been on Tottenham’s radar for some time after Football Insider first revealed in November last year the club were ready to go head-to-head with some of their Premier League rivals to secure his signature.
The forward notched 20 goals in the 2022-23 season before his eight-month ban for breaking the FA’s gambling rules saw him miss the first half of the latest campaign.
Despite only scoring four goals in 17 appearances since his return in January, Toney’s stock remains high after he was included in England’s training squad ahead of the upcoming European Championships.
O’Rourke suggested the Englishman is a “ready-made goalscorer” to come in and provide an impact for Tottenham if they manage to sign him.
There are expected to be plenty of changes behind the scenes at Spurs this summer following Ange Postecoglou’s scathing comments around the “rebuild” of his side.
