Peterborough United camp reveal who ‘smart money’ is on as Coventry City transfer link gathers pace

Reported Coventry City transfer target Harrison Burrows of Peterborough United

Coventry City transfer news from CoventryLive as Sky Blues continue to be linked with more Peterborough United players in the wake of Ephron Mason-Clark’s January deal

Speculation continues regarding Coventry City’s interest in at least one Peterborough United player targeted for transfer this summer.

The Sky Blues have already added Posh’s Ephron Mason-Clark to their ranks after shelling out £4.25million for the powerful left winger in the January window, with the 24-year-old staying at London Road for the remainder of the season before hooking up with Mark Robins’ squad for pre-season in the next few weeks.

At the time the New Year deal was struck it emerged that City have designs on a couple more of Darren Ferguson’s players, as revealed by the Cambridgeshire club’s owner, Darragh MacAnthony. In his podcast, The Hard Truth, the out-spoken chairman gave a fascinating insight into the negotiating process between himself and City owner Doug King’s “relentless” pursuit of Mason-Clark. The 47-year-old Irish entrepreneur said: “Doug asked for an option on one of my other players as well, because they like quite a few of our players.”

One name that keeps cropping up is 22-year-old left-back Harrison Burrows. MacAnthony turned down a £5m offer in 2022 for the man who scored both goals at Wembley in April, to help his side to an EFL Trophy victory over Wycombe.

Although his contract is up in the summer, Posh have an option of a further year and are fully expected to trigger that, meaning he will cost money. It’s understood MacAnthony will want at least £5m for the player.

Mulling over the early summer speculation, the Peterborough Telegraph’s Alan Swann wrote: “ Coventry City, and this won’t be the last time this club is mentioned, have been linked with the left-back and he already has a special relationship with left-winger Ephron Mason-Clark who is on his way to the Sky Blues in the summer.

“Norwich City have also been mentioned in some places as have newly-promoted clubs Derby County and Portsmouth, although it’s not certain the latter pair have enough money.”

Another possible target for the Sky Blues is defensive midfielder Hector Kyprianou who was the subject of a rejected bid for his services from another Championship club in January.

The 22-year-old former Tottenham Academy prospect joined Posh in the summer of 2022 from Leyton Orient for an undisclosed fee, signing a three year contract.

Swann continued: “Championship side Watford tried to buy the midfielder in January, but have since changed manager. It’s known Coventry have a ‘first option’ on a Posh player this summer and the smart money is on it being Kyprianou or Burrows.”
