Former Blazers Coach Maurice Cheeks to Join Knicks
Maurice Cheeks coached the Portland Trail Blazers from 2001-05. Now, he joins Tom Thibodeau and the New York Knicks.
A former Portland Trail Blazers coach has a new home, according to ESPN insider Adrian Wojnarowski.
Cheeks, 67, has spent three decades as a coach in the NBA, dating back to 1994 with the Philadelphia 76ers, the team he played for from 1978-89.
Cheeks’ first head coaching gig came with the Blazers from 2001-05, where he led the team to the playoffs in 2002 and 2003. Since then, he’s returned to the Sixers as a head coach and had a brief tenure with the Detroit Pistons for 50 games in the 2013-14 campaign. But most of his time has been spent as an assistant, most recently under Billy Donovan with the Oklahoma City Thunder (2015-20) and Chicago Bulls (2020-24).
Now, he joins Tom Thibodeau and the New York Knicks, who are one of the few top contenders in the Eastern Conference.
