Cleveland Cavaliers Getting Closer To Acquiring Golden State Warriors Asset

The Cleveland Cavaliers are still without a head coach following their dismissal of JB Bickerstaff. New Orleans Pelicans assistant coach James Borrego is reportedly the leading candidate to become the Cavs’ new head coach, especially with the Los Angeles Lakers going with JJ Redick.

However, NBA insider Marc Stein has also shared that Golden State Warriors assistant coach Kenny Atkinson is getting more momentum for the Cavs’ coaching gig.

Will Kenny Atkinson Win the Cleveland Cavaliers Coaching Job?

There is no assurance that either Borrego or Atkinson would win the job since there are others in consideration, but it does sound likely at the moment that one of those coaches will end up getting hired by Cleveland, which is coming off a second-round exit in the 2024 NBA Playoffs at the hands of the Boston Celtics.

Like Borrego, Atkinson has head coaching experience. Before joining the Warriors, Atkinson was head coach of the Brooklyn Nets from the 2016-17 season to the 2019-20 campaign, garnering an overall record of 118-190. He also had stints with the New York Knicks and the Atlanta Hawks as an assistant.

In the 2018-19 season, Atkinson finished fifth in the Coach of the Year voting, receiving two first-place votes for the award that eventually was won by then Milwaukee Bucks head coach Mike Budenholzer.
