Leeds United reasoning behind rejected Brentford bid for Archie Gray shared

Graham Smyth has suggested that the reason behind Archie Gray’s move from Leeds United to Brentford falling through is because of issues with the payment schedule.

The Yorkshire Evening Post writer reported via the publication’s website on 30 June that despite a £40million deal looking imminent on Saturday night (29 June), the way it was set to be paid hadn’t been ironed out fully.

Although the terms have not been fully disclosed, it will likely be down to various add-ons on top of the upfront payment.

This has then resulted in Leeds flat-out rejecting the offer for Gray, which has left both Tottenham and Chelsea still lurking for his transfer.

What does this mean for Leeds and their PSR worries?

As Leeds fans will well know, their club are in need of sales to ensure they can abide by the PSR laws.

Hence why the likes of Crysencio Summerville and Gray have been consistently linked with moves away over the course of summer.

Fortunately for the West Yorkshire outfit, the sales of both Tyler Adams and Luis Sinisterra will count towards their 2023/24 accounting period so the amount they have to raise isn’t too extortionate.

Indeed, Leeds’ recent sale of Marc Roca to Real Betis will also count towards the period too.

Prior to when the £40m bid for Gray was lodged by Brentford, Leeds weren’t looking to sell anyone before the 30 June deadline.

This is largely due to the investment that the Red Bull group have made into the club following their partnership with the Whites being agreed upon.

Although a move for Gray isn’t off the cards completely, should a deal higher than what Brentford bid come in, it would be hard to see why Paraag Marathe would turn it down again.
