Vikings sign Christian Darrisaw to massive $113 million extension
One of the foundational pieces for the Vikings is staying in Minnesota for the long haul.
Left tackle Christian Darrisaw and the Vikings agreed to a four-year extension that’s worth $113 million — $77 million of which is guaranteed, according to multiple reports.
Darrisaw, 25, still had two years left on his rookie contract, but the Vikings have decided to keep him through the 2029 season, the team confirmed in a news release.
The 2021 first-round pick out of Virginia Tech has started 39 games since then, only getting called for two holding penalties during his career up to this point.
According to Pro Football Focus, he graded out at an 82.4 for the 2023 season and yielded 11 sacks over the last two years.
Last year, as a team, the Vikings allowed 47 saves, which was 10th-most in the NFL.
Keeping a talented piece of the offensive line is paramount for the Vikings, which drafted Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy with their first-round pick this year.
McCarthy, who led the Wolverines to a national title last season, is the the hopeful quarterback of the future that the Vikings likely want Darrisaw to be blocking the blind side for.
However, McCarthy, as of now, isn’t going to be the No. 1 quarterback going into Week 1 of the season.
Ex-Jets quarterback — and a former first-rounder himself — Sam Darnold is still QB1 as training camp gets underway in Minnesota this week.
Head coach Kevin O’Connell also told reporters Monday that Darnold, after a year as the 49ers backup, will get the majority of first-team snaps at training camp.
“I have no preconceived, preset depth chart in my mind beyond Sam is the No. 1 quarterback — he’s taken the most reps with the [starters],” Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell said Monday at camp. “Sam had a great spring. J.J. came in here after being drafted and had a really productive spring as well.
“Really, my message to those guys is I want a really competitive situation.”
