Leeds United eye shock return for Championship winger amid transfer battle
Amidst departing attackers, Leeds United are eyeing a shock move for academy graduate Jack Clarke. The Sunderland winger was sold to Tottenham for £10 million in 2019 following a downfall after a contracted virus.
According to The Sunday Mirror, The Whites are looking to replace Georginio Rutter with Jack Clarke. Previously, the York-born winger was seen as a replacement for Crysencio Summerville but now he’ll be the second attacker that Farke wants to bring at Elland Road.
Rutter has verbally agreed to leave for Brighton and Hove Albion but an official announcement is yet to be made. The Seagulls managed the deal by triggering a £40 million release clause which was set to expire on 14th August at 11 pm
The departure of the Frenchman saw another attacking presence leave the club following the likes of Crysencio Summerville. Glen Kamara and Archie Gray also left leaving the midfield without depth.
All these players are yet to be replaced. The 49ers have been working double time with less than two weeks left on the clock for the transfer window deadline.
The West Yorkshire outfit face competition from Southampton and Lazio who are also keen for Clarke’s services. With two top-flight clubs challenging for Jack’s signature, Leeds United might have a hard time securing the winger.
Marcelo Bielsa was a big fan of the 23-year-old. However, after a drop in form, the Argentine manager didn’t even consider the youngster in his plans.
Jack Clarke isn’t directly comparable to Crysencio Summerville or Georginio Rutter but his title as one of the most exciting players in the division surely means something.
After leaving Leeds United, the English winger has developed a lot. From being an overhyped talent to living up to some expectations, Clarke has come a long way.
The 23-year-old’s versatility can also be an asset for The Whites. With the Englishman capable of playing all the attacking roles, it can solve the club’s front-line problem.
The 49ers can use him either on the left or the right with attacking midfield also an option. Jack is also an excellent dribbler making him a great ball carrier.
The EFL Championship is known for its physicality where defenders fall short against skilful and agile attackers. Clarke’s ability to deliver quality crosses in the box makes him a constant threat to the opposition.
