Former Rocket Filip Cederqvist Returns Home

Sabres trade prospect Filip Cederqvist to Canadiens - Buffalo Hockey Beat

Sweden’s Frolunda HC recently announced a three-year deal with forward Filip Cederqvist.

“Filip is a player from the region who has good size and is a good skater. We like the character and he has the tools to be a power forward. He has shown that before,” sporting director Fredrik Sjostrom said via statement.

“I have learned a lot even though I had higher hopes,” Cederqvist spoke about his American Hockey League experience. “I showed in Djurgarden and SHL before I left that I am a two-way forward who can be trusted, I want to build on that in Frölunda.

The 25-year-old joined the Canadiens organization on January 11th after being acquired via trade from the Buffalo Sabres for future considerations. The Athletic reported at the time of the transaction that Cederqvist had advised the Sabres that he would be returning to the SHL at the end of the season.

Cederqvist was drafted in the fifth round, 143rd overall in 2019 and spent another three years overseas before signing a two-year deal with the Sabres. In his final season with Djugardens in the Swedish Hockey League, he totaled 14 goals and 32 points in 49 games.

He collected 24 points in 74 games over the previous two seasons with the Rochester Americans at the time of the trade and obtained seven points in 34 games with the Rocket.

With Laval, the six-foot, three-inch winger mostly slotted in the middle of the lineup and received occasional usage on the penalty kill unit.
