Boston Bruins sign two-time Stanley Cup champion to PTO
A two-time Stanley Cup champion is heading to the Boston Bruins on a professional tryout contract.
In a post on their official website on Saturday afternoon, the Boston Bruins announced that they’ve signed veteran free agent forward Tyler Johnson to a PTO. Johnston will head to Boston’s training camp next month and appear in pre-season games with the team in hopes of earning a guaranteed contract for the 2024-25 campaign.
Johnson, 34, has spent the last three seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks after being traded to them by the Tampa Bay Lightning, where he played parts of nine years, winning the Stanley Cup in back-to-back years – 2020 and 2021.
Last season, the Spokane, Washington native appeared in 67 games for the Chicago Blackhawks, registering 31 points (17 goals, 14 assists), 26 penalty minutes and was a minus-35.
With the Boston Bruins looking to remain competitive in a very tough Atlantic Division, bringing in a player like Tyler Johnson is smart for depth reasons. If Johnson is able to earn a contract with the Bruins out of training camp, there’s no doubt he’ll play a bottom-six role for the team and is someone who is capable of playing 60+ games in 2024-25.
